The capital of the Primorsky Territory, - Vladivostok, - is one of the most picturesque and interesting cities in the Russian Far East.
The city was founded in 1860 and its mission was defense south-eastern border of Russia from invasion. During the Soviet time Vladivostok, as the home base of the Pacific Fleet, was a closed city. Only in 1992 Vladivostok was officially opened for visit by foreigners.
Vladivostok is located as an Asian city. (By plane, you get the city for just hours fron Japan, Seoul (Korea) and China. Air travel to Moscow, however, takes as much as 8 hours. But its historical center is very original. Not a single building repeats another in its architecture. Gothic, German Baroque, Modern and Russian style can be seen together in a unique ensemble.
The famous Transsib railway begins from Vladivostok. It was laid by the heir to the Russian throne, future emperor Nikolai 2, in 1891 and became the main road of Siberia, that connected the center of Russia and its outlying districts.
